HASBROUCK HEIGHTS BOYS OVERCOME ADVERSITY TO WIN BERGEN COUNTY TRACK TITLE

OLD TAPPAN – The Hasbrouck Heights boys track and field team has been fighting through their share of injuries since the beginning of the season. With several key contributors out of the lineup the last few weeks, coach Robert Brady has had to turn to everyone in the lineup to step up and pick up the pieces. But despite the setbacks, the Aviators have shown what they're about. A week after cruising to the NJIC-Meadowlands title, Hasbrouck Heights captured the C Division team title at the Gene “Red” Littler Bergen County Championships on Saturday at Northern Valley Old Tappan High School. “I couldn’t be any prouder of this team,” said Brady, whose Aviators scored 106 points to edge Glen Rock by six points. “When you look at our injuries and who's missing, it’s great to see others step up and fill the spots and contribute. We’ve asked some of the boys who have never competed in certain events to pick it up and learn them. And to see their progress and where they came from, is just amazing. We’ve learned a lot about each other the last few weeks and we now know what others are capable of.” One of those athletes who was asked to compete in an unfamiliar event is Vincent Sedlmeir. Moments after helping his team win the 4-x-400 meter relay to give the Aviators a one point lead over Glen Rock, Sedlmeir hurried over to the high jump area knowing the team championship was on the line. Just two weeks after giving jumping a try, the junior finished fourth and teammate Will Koukoutsis took sixth to secure the team title. Earlier in the day, Sedlmeir won the 110 hurdles in 15.94. “I feel like I’m in a good spot. I definitely have to focus more on my race and try not to get so intimidated in the beginning and just go out there and run my hardest,” Sedlmeir said. “The team is working well together. We’re getting personal bests and scoring for the team.” Glen Rock senior Andrew Lagattuta completed the trifecta this weekend with top finishes in the 800 and 3200. After winning the mile on Friday, the senior returned and won the half mile in 1:57.51 and the two mile in 10:14.70. "I'm starting to run faster times, but it's still not my best yet," Lagattuta said. "I'm training hard and I'm concentrating on the next few weeks. As a team, we're all coming together." The winners of each event at this weekend’s group meet qualify in all events for next Friday’s Bergen Meet of Champions at Hackensack High School. The remaining spots in each event will be filled in order by qualifying major meet performances from April 1 – May 11.
